“The Care Mobile visits area elementary schools, staying 1-3 weeks at a time, focusing on serving children who have been referred and who qualify for the free dental service. The majority of children seen have never been treated by a dentist; others have never used a toothbrush.” In 2008 2277 children in Beaufort County were seen by the Care Mobile staff and received cleanings, x-rays, sealants, and fluoride.
• Nicole Layton, Executive Director, Community Caring for Children

“The septic tank program is designed to provide rural low-income families in Beaufort and Jasper counties with access to better health by providing septic tanks that prevent groundwater contamination. Untreated sewage may cause deadly bacteria and viruses, leading to health pandemics in rural communities.” Last year 24 septic systems were installed for low-income families in Beaufort and Jasper Counties.
• Roland Gardner, Executive Director, Beaufort Jasper Hampton Colleton Health Services

“When the transmission of HIV is reduced in the community everyone benefits, overall costs of health care are reduced, and infected persons improve their health status thereby reducing the number of AIDS related deaths.” 223 HIV+ individuals built their capacity to live successfully with their disease in 2008 and did not develop opportunistic infections that categorize AIDS diagnosis.
