Equality vs. Equity
Creating a strong community means ensuring everyone has the opportunity to succeed, but not everyone starts from the same place. That’s where the difference between equity and equality matters.
Equality means giving everyone the same resources or support. It assumes that everyone starts from the same place and has the same needs.
Equity means providing different levels of support based on individual needs, so everyone has a fair opportunity to succeed. It recognizes that barriers exist, and works to remove them.
Why It Matters
In our community, not everyone has the same access to opportunities, resources, or support. By focusing on equity, we address gaps and barriers, target resources where they are needed most, and create fair opportunities for all.
Our Approach
At United Way of the Lowcountry, we focus on equity, not because it’s different, but because it’s necessary. Providing the same support to everyone doesn’t always lead to the same outcomes, but providing the right support can.
