Compassion That Works

Becky Francis spent her life standing up for dignity, education and fairness. The Francis Dignity Project carries on her work. She believed everyone deserves compassion and practical help to rebuild and thrive.

The project gives individuals and families the tools, resources and opportunities they need to stand on their own. Dignity stays at the center of it all.

The work focuses on three connected goals: meeting basic needs, building self-sufficiency and creating a supportive community.

MEETING BASIC NEEDS

Stability starts with the basics. Long-term independence depends on:

  • Safe, secure shelter. It's the starting point for everything else.
  • Nutritious food. Bodies and minds can't heal without it.
  • Showers and clean laundry. Our mobile trailers bring both.
BUILDING SELF-SUFFICIENCY

Lasting change comes from opportunity. People move forward when they have:

  • Job skills and employment. Steady work builds financial independence.
  • Education and training. New skills open doors to better jobs.
  • Mental health and addiction recovery services. Treatment clears the path to stability.
  • Connections to permanent housing. A stable home makes everything else possible.
CREATING A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY

No one becomes self-sufficient alone. Communities make it possible by:

  • Reducing stigma. Understanding replaces judgment.
  • Strengthening social connections. Belonging pushes back against isolation.
  • Speaking up for change. Poverty and the shortage of affordable housing are problems we can solve together.

One of the most visible parts of the Francis Dignity Project is the Showers of Dignity trailer, a mobile unit that travels Beaufort and Jasper counties, bringing hot showers, clean clothing and hygiene essentials to anyone facing barriers to basic hygiene and laundry. The trailer carries its own water and power, so it can set up wherever it's needed most. And everything is free. Always.

Inside the Trailer

The trailer holds two private shower stalls, one ADA accessible, each stocked with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Every neighbor gets a towel roll with a toothbrush, toothpaste and washcloth, plus a new T-shirt, socks and underwear in their size. A supply cart holds extra hygiene products for anyone who needs them, and a washer and dryer are available on site.

More Than a Shower

A shower may be why someone visits. Dignity is why we're here. Every visit is a chance to learn what a neighbor needs and connect them with trusted local resources. We distribute backpacks for our unhoused residents stocked with essentials and also help those who need to obtain an ID for housing, employment and health care.
