Advocating for 211 in South Carolina

Sometimes, the most important work happens behind the scenes.

At United Way of the Lowcountry, advocacy means making sure our community has access to the resources it needs, not just today, but for the long term. One of the most impactful ways we’ve done this is by advocating for 211 to be included as a funded line item in South Carolina’s state budget.

What Is 211?

211 is a free, 24/7 resource that connects individuals and families to local services, from food and housing to healthcare and crisis support.

What Does Advocacy Look Like?

Advocacy isn’t about politics, it’s about ensuring essential services are recognized, supported, and sustainable. United Way worked alongside partners to:

  • Elevate the importance of 211 across the state

  • Share real stories and data from local communities

  • Demonstrate the value of having a centralized access point for help

  • Encourage long‑term investment in this critical service

Without dedicated funding, services like 211 can be uncertain or inconsistent. By advocating for 211 to be included in the state budget as a line item, we help ensure continued access to a trusted, statewide resource; reliable support for individuals and families in need; and a stronger, more coordinated system of care.

We don’t just respond to the needs, we work to strengthen the systems behind them. By advocating for sustainable funding, we help move solutions from temporary to permanent.

When systems like 211 are stable and supported, communities are better equipped to respond in everyday situations and in times of crisis. Because access to help shouldn’t depend on uncertainty —it should be there when people need it most.
