Volunteer with United Way of the Lowcountry

You may have noticed we're not your typical United Way. While we do fund and work closely with several community partners, the heart of what we do is direct service. We run the programs. We employ the staff. We show up every day in the Lowcountry.

That makes volunteering with us different too. When you give your time to UWLC, you're not supporting us from a distance. You're in the room. You're part of the team, working directly with our staff and our neighbors to build something that lasts.

Our programs focus where it matters most: expanding educational opportunity, advancing economic mobility, and meeting basic needs. When these three pillars stand strong, every person in our community has the foundation they need to build a path to self-sufficiency.

Join us. The Lowcountry is more than a place. It's a community we build together, one person at a time.

Your Voice and Unique Perspective Can Help Us Make a Greater Impact!

UWLC’s Impact Process is one of the things that make us unique! We ask volunteers from the community, who donate to United Way, to tell us how they would like their money invested in the community! We ask them to visit, report, deliberate, and evaluate agencies and programs that serve the residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties. The Community Impact Committee and panel members work hand in hand with the staff of the United Way and agencies, making equitable and responsible investment decisions.

Help Make an Impact on Education in the Lowcountry

Trained Read Indeed! volunteer reading tutors are matched with children in grades Pre-K through third grade who are identified by school literacy specialists as needing additional help with reading. These are the students who would otherwise fall through the cracks without intervention.

The tutor and child meet to read together for 30 minutes per student each week during the school year, and most of our tutors work with at least three students per visit. Your time and commitment will make a lifetime of difference to a child.

Volunteer Income Tax Advisors (VITA) Volunteers Needed

Dedicated volunteers are needed to help VITA provide free tax preparation services to people with limited incomes. By helping working families take advantage of programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), you can help bring in millions of dollars to the local community, dollars to help families jumpstart their savings, reduce debt, and invest in our community.

Rally Your Office to Help the Lowcountry

Consider volunteering as a Workplace Campaign Coordinator! Workplace campaigns bring your colleagues together for a cause. Whether your organization is large or small, the impact you can make through collective giving is substantial. Workplace campaigns are held during a short period of time, and allow you and your co-workers to raise money to support the United Way! Employees have the option of making a gift by cash, credit card or pledge to donate a portion of their paychecks over the course of the year. Small amounts, bundled together, add up to a large impact and an easy way to give back to the community. We offer an online Workplace Campaign toolkit complete with helpful email templates, digital brochures and videos. Click here to send us an email for more information.

Invite Your Neighbors to Join You in Supporting United Way!

We’re always looking for Community Champions who are happy to ask their neighbors to join them in supporting United Way. We realize that every neighborhood is unique so we can help you personalize your community champion campaign using the tools (email, letter, and social media templates; print or digital brochures; and videos) available in our Community Champion toolkit. We’ll even send the emails and letters to your neighbors on your behalf. Click here to send us an email for more information.
